, I would love to be able to claim that I am already the best leader that I can be. However, the truth is that all humans are constantly growing and learning, and there is always room for improvement. This month, I’ve chosen to focus all of my attention on how I can become a better leader myself, and how I can teach what I’ve learned to each of my team leaders.

Steps to Becoming a Better Leader

The first step in this process is understanding what it means to lead. While it may be easier to simply manage a team, give direction and set expectations to accomplish our goals, it doesn’t necessarily make us a better roofing company as a whole. How can your method of management be designed to benefit each and every employee? Leadership means having mutual respect with your team, inspiring them and helping them improve in their positions. It also means having a vision for your company or team, and empowering others on the path to achieving that vision. Managing is controlling the process, while leading is contributing to the process.

As John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

The second step is watching and learning. For Roofing & More, this involves connecting with and contributing to organizations and programs that my team and I can join to sharpen our leadership skills. We also participate and share our expertise in leadership training seminars that help team leaders find their voice and their vision, ultimately leaving with a better understanding of how to motivate employees to give their best effort at every task. An added benefit to connecting with other organizations is the opportunity to see how others outside of your company lead. Everyone has a different leadership style, and observing them may spark creativity or provide an exciting, new perspective.
