It should be no secret that I am fully committed to customer service, whether to our customers, or anyone who calls our office and interacts with our team. Over more than two decades as an owner of a company that offers home improvement in Chantilly, VA, and surrounding areas, I’ve discovered there is one critical factor that has the greatest impact on our customer service: the hiring process.
Hiring is hard. There are dozens of books written on how to hire good employees, but what the books don’t tell you is how easy it is to hire the wrong person. No matter how many interviews, assessments or tests you give someone, two things are usually true:
-
You’re seeing the potential employee on his or her best behavior.
-
And you are under significant pressure to fill a vacant, or soon-to-be vacant, spot on the team.
The Dangers of ‘Good Enough’
Those forces can be extremely powerful, and lead business owners and managers to make bad hires, often because they settle for “good enough” instead of holding out for “great.” It’s easy to convince yourself that you need someone NOW, so customer service doesn’t suffer. Trust me, it suffers more in the long run if you hire for filling a space, rather than filling a need.
At [company_name], we initiated a six-step hiring process, designed to combat the common mistakes, and ensure we take the time required to find and hire the right employees. Our process takes longer to fill an open position, and while that can cause short-term stress, I believe it’s a commitment to our customers and our company that is well worth the time.
I won’t bore you with the details, and I hope you’ll take comfort in knowing we are committed to customer service and quality; starting with the most important step – hiring the right people. For me, that includes hiring people who respect our core values, and who will live our mission statement every day. Finding these individuals isn’t easy, but it is certainly worth it.
