For those who aren’t directly involved in business operations, the downfall of a competitor may seem like a reason to celebrate. It could mean more business and less stress about price matching and losing clients. However, those with an insider perspective can understand what a failing business means to the industry as a whole.

‘A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats’

I always want to see the home improvement industry succeeding, with jobs being created and homes being preserved through regular maintenance from skilled workers. I want to see a desire for learning the trade and to pass skills on to the next generation of employees – giving people a reason to seek out professionals and not risk injury or damage to their home with DIY techniques. I want to see businesses helping each other, giving referrals for services they don’t provide or areas they don’t reach. As the saying goes, “A rising tide lifts all boats,” meaning that improving practices in the industry will elevate everyone’s performance.

This is why I recently got involved in a workshop where business owners came together to make a difference in the direction the industry is taking. I wanted an open room to discuss what helps and what hurts businesses, and exchange ideas to improve. I personally shared business practices we use every day at Roofing & More, known to be successful in maintaining client relationships and bringing in new ones. I explained the reasoning behind many of our roofing company’s decisions, and even taught other business owners how we develop our pricing models and how to really know their financial numbers, so they can have more knowledge to succeed.

I’m so proud to be part of the community that came together to talk and listen to each other. I hope that in 2018 we can all take a step back and make more of an effort to help each other, whether that means sharing helpful business tips or in other ways. It has always been something that I am passionate about, and I believe that it is necessary for any industry, including ours.
