John Maxwell once said, “Every new level of growth we hope to experience as leaders calls for a new level of change. You cannot have one without the other. If you want to be a better leader, get ready to make some trades.”

This quote resonated with me recently as I have been thinking about my own growth, both professionally and personally. If you asked me 15 years ago where I would be in the future, I would have never guessed how much I’d grow with this business. Not to mention the places it would take my family and me. The industry I work in is constantly changing and providing new and exciting ways to connect with others and create homes that are better for the people in our communities.

How I Got Here

Some of my reflections are being captured in a chapter of an upcoming book I’m honored to be writing a chapter in. The book is due for release in September of this year. In this chapter, I share parts of my journey and some realizations about how I arrived where I am today.

Of course, I didn’t get to be the president of Roofing & More by going at it alone. When considering my current position, it’s important for me to remember what got me here: the people, including customers, I’ve worked with, and the knowledge they have taught me along the way. Each and every individual I have worked with on my journey has made a mark in my life.

However, it’s also important to remember that only I have the power to move myself forward, and it’s up to me to learn how to keep growing to the next level and take my team with me. When attempting to reach the next level, you must examine yourself first. Find the areas in which you thrive, and listen to others for opinions on how you can improve in other ways. It is my hope that I can continue to reach new levels of leadership, because there is no final destination when it comes to improvement. I am humbled to realize the journey continues.
